Lake superior pequaming bay waterfront property for sale! This 2.7+/- acre parcel has 261+/- feet of pequaming bay frontage! An area filled with early settler history, pequaming bay is part of lake superior's larger keweenaw bay, in l'anse township in the north-central baraga county. Once the site of an indian village, the name of pequaming is thought to be derived from bagwa (or pagwa) and additional words translated to become "at the shallow place". Pequaming is michigan's best example of a tombolo, "almost an island", a geological term applied to an island type landform that is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar. The beach shoreline, on both the west and east sides of this spit have become beautiful bays, great for recreation! The indian village was gone by the time the first white settler, trader peter crebassa, arrived in the 1830's. In the late 1870's the village of pequaming was founded and a lumber company built a mill here that produced 25-million board feet of lumber and 25-million shingles annually during the 1890's. Over 1, 000 men were employed, 250 of whom worked at the mill. Many workers lived in neat company owned homes in the nearby village. By 1910 most of the u.P.'s virgin pine was cut and the mill operation declined. About 1920 henry ford decided that the ford motor company should control it's own sources of raw materials, and began surveying land in the u.P., especially around l'anse. Ford purchased 400, 000 acres of land in the area including the mill and the town. Ford built railroads, modernized the mill, and remodeled the homes - equipping them with electricity and running water. The sawmill supplied the rouge plant in lower michigan, with wood for station wagons. The ford era ended when automobile production reached a standstill during the great depression.
